You may have seen the bleeding-heart liberal bumper sticker that says, “It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need and the Pentagon has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.”
Yeah, I hate those wordy bumper stickers you practically cause an accident to read too. But I couldn’t agree more with the sentiment.
So we’re still holding bake sales for schools, and some are doing more. The Cleveland-based Human Fund is working hard to fill in the gaps in the Cleveland schools as resources for arts programs have been cut.
To raise a little more money than a bake sale produces, it’s holding a benefit concert at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern. The show will features Hammond B-3 player Melvin Seals and his JGB Band.
Seals is best known for his long-time membership in the Jerry Garcia Band, all he way until Garcia’s death in 1995. He later reassembled much of the remaining band, which plays to this day as a tribute to Garcia. Of course, the music’s a lively mixture of things: R&B, funk, bluegrass, rock, even gospel.
The evening also includes student performances in the tavern at 6 pm, followed by Altervision at 7. Seals & JGB play at 6 in the ballroom.
Tickets are $150, which includes food, an open bar, and valet parking. Go to the Human Fund’s website to purchase tickets.
