Ethnic Edibles are Everywhere
Ohio City’s ethnic and economic diversity are an inspiration. It is the home to generations of residents from Southern and Eastern Europe and Asia as well as newer residents from the Latin America and the Middle-East. Older neighborhoods have been restored and revitalized and new town homes, condominiums and even loft apartments house professionals and artists looking for vibrant urban spaces to live and work in.
Ohio City was once a city in its own right, directly across the Cuyahoga River from the city of Cleveland, it competed for the commerce and ethnic people that the river, lake, canal and trains brought to Northeast Ohio, but Ohio City ultimately lost the battle and became part of the Cleveland in 1854.
The West Side Market is the neighborhood’s most noteworthy landmark, and for good reason. This orderly jumble of vendors and food stands represents an astounding array of produce, meat and fish, dairy items, baked goods, prepared foods, condiments and spices. With the broad range of ethnicities represented, West Side Market is really a condensed version of the neighborhood.
Food is not all that people find in Ohio City. The immense success of Great Lakes Brewery has created a Mecca for beer lovers as well. Other well known beer establishments and breweries, as well as wine bars and taverns have sprouted up throughout the Ohio City neighborhood as well.
