PARK(ing) Day: Community in a Parking Space

Fri 9/20 @ 11am – 1pm

By Isaac Mell

PARK(ing) Day briefly repurposes select parking spaces.

First step, take away the cars—though only for two hours of parking time. Second, bring in artists and activists to engage passers-by with weddings, massages, worm composting, finger-painting, health clinics, art galleries, croquet tournaments, cook-outs, dog parks, marshlands, and other unique ecologies.

And then leave: Clean up your parking space; in fact, scour it so that it looks better than when you arrived. All that should be left are questions about the types of places and activities we want to see.

As intended by Rebar Studios in San Francisco, the event is open-source, open-ended, with the main point being the replacement of the impersonal, consumerism-driven transactions of a city with the free, human-based interactions of a community. Friday’s possible pop-ups, facilitated by LAND Studios: Bike repair, solar power and art lectures. Watch the video here.

Check out the event’s Facebook page and watch the video interview above with Ted Ferringer, Bialosky + Partners, Architects, and Chris Lohr, PhD student at CSU.

  1. MIXED bag for surrounding biz…ATTRACTION of sorts…croquet games to rest of it…DIFFERENT. IN a sense CAN appreciate WHAT trying to do,etc.and IS a DOWNTOWN biz aspect to all this tooo so THAT is in the equation too…that aside..HAVE fun. IN reality got too much retail peddling too much junk of wrong kind (FEELS like it anyways) OF/for lot of bizarre/semi bad reasons bought by those with relatively little money,TOO much debt and considering what has been happening to people I would say almost POINTLESS but I don’t want to go on a diatribe about Americana…..

FINALLY if ones circumstances, etc.predispose one one way or the other to certain lifestyles, etc.then gonna do that…

WILL say THIS… MAYBE likes of certain local, other ed institutions spewing out urban study white papers on all kinds of subjects MAYBE finally bearing fruit of sorts but SEEMS more like AVERAGE slobs with el cheapo high tech devices and a STANDBACK take a hard good look mentality after experiencing school of hard knocks said BLANK all this and….

NOW lets see if THIS lasts or goes way of LOT of other stuff….I GUESS renewal n repurposing …
