Thu 9/26 @ 8PM
Senegalese jazz musician Abdou Mboup is a one-man show, accompanying his vocals on percussion and a pair of African stringed instruments, xalam and kora.
His musical roots are long and deep. He grew up around music in his native country and mixed traditional instruments with the local African pop music in the ’70s.
He relocated to Paris in the ’80s, which allowed him to connect with a network of jazz musicians who provided opportunities for him to tour and record extensively with a diverse group of artists, including Jon Hassell, Pharoah Sanders, Jean Luc Ponty, Toots Thielemans, Afrika Bambaataa, Nina Simone, and the Tom Tom Club.
He now lives, works and teaches in the New York metropolitan area, which makes it easier for him to play gigs like the one this week at Nighttown, where he’ll play solo.
Tickets are a bargain at $10.
