Despite the overly precious name (the first adopted, the second her real name), British singer-songwriter Scout Niblett has built an impressive career, working with distinguished collaborators, over the last 12 years.
Her first recorded work was a split single with underground indie icon, the late Jason Molina. She’s recorded with legendary curmudgeon producer Steve Albini and another indie icon Will Oldham has contributed vocals and guitar to an album. And her records have been released on well-regarded indie labels Secretly Canadian and Drag City, which release this year’s It’s Up to Emma (her real name), her sixth full-length.
Her music is usually described as sparse. The instrumental choices — with Niblett playing most of the instruments herself — feel very purposeful, as if each is there for a specific reason. They keep the focus on Niblett’s intense vocals, which can glimmer with sweet clarity or flare up with flashes of aggression and anger.
Niblett will be at Mahall’s 20 Lanes Scout with Dope Body and Who Even Cares?
Tickets are $8.
