Cleveland Chamber Group Les Délices Honors Angry Women

Sat 10/5 @ 8PM

Sun 10/6 @ 4PM

Cleveland chamber ensemble Les Délices has a sizzling program lined up to kick off its fifth season.

“Woman Scorned” will feature Chicago-based mezzo-soprano Angela Young Smucker in a program of music about the kinds of passions that leave destruction in their wake.

The ensemble promises an evening of “wild, descriptive music depicting sorceresses and temptresses” that “explores universal themes of desire, jealousy, shame, and revenge by giving voice to the spurned lovers of antiquity.”

Well, that shouldn’t be boring!

The music includes a pair of Ohio premieres: Thomas-Louis Bourgeois’ Phèdre et Hippolyte and Colin de Blamont’s cantata Circé. Jean-Féry Rebel’s trio sonata “La Junon” will open the evening and excerpts from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s opera Medeé and the chaconne from Lully’s Armide fill out the program.

Smucker will be joined by Les Délices’ director Debra Nagy on baroque oboe, baroque violinist Julie Andrijeski, viola da gamba player Emily Walhout, and harpsichordist Michael Sponseller.

Saturday’s performance takes place at the William Busta Gallery.

Sunday’s is at the Plymouth Church’s Herr Chapel in Shaker Heights. It will be preceded at 3 pm by a pre-concert talk by musicologist Susan McClary.

Tickets are $25-$35, with a $5 discount for advance purchase.
