It’s exciting and gratifying to see so many women in the local music scene, their participation accelerating with each passing decade.
Bethesda’s Shanna Delaney and the Womack Family Band’s Haley Heyman both fill traditional roles, fronting a band full of guys. Each makes a strong impact that helps give the band its flavor.
Delaney’s sweet, intimate vocals are the perfect vehicle for the band’s energetic folky pop, while Womack’s smooth, jazz-inflected delivery blends easily with the vocals of bandmates Tony Schaffer and her brother Noah Heyman.
Bethesda released its latest album Reunion earlier this year shortly before heading for Austin to play a showcase during South by Southwest. The Womacks latest is The Blue Room. Like Bethesda, they’ve been doing quite a bit of touring outside the area recently. Both are among the top prospects to break out of the area.
Singer/guitarist/pianist Morgan Mecaskey, formerly with Tinamou, released her debut album Righteous Kind last year. She’s got a rich, mature voice that lends weight and gravity to her songs.
Connecticut-based Daphne Lee Martin will join the Clevelanders. She’s got a dark, insinuating voice that she applies to late-night torch songs like Sin and Whiskey and Faithless Beauty on her latest album Moxie.
Her music, which combines influences from jazz, blues, early 20th century pop, and eastern European music, is glazed with a melancholy worldiness. She seems like an odd choice for this bill — she seems like she belong at Nighttown — but she’s well worth coming early to hear.
Admission is $8.
