For a decade, Alvy Powell deployed his powerful bass baritone in the service of his country as a soloist in the U.S. Army chorus. The Virginia native moved on to challenge himself in operatic roles. He has become especially associated with the role of Porgy in George and Ira Gershwin’s 1935 opera Porgy and Bess.

When he joins the Akron Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Chorus for a performance at E.J. Thomas Hall this week, he’ll be reaching back to his time in the military.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Symphony is doing its annual Salute to Those Serve, an evening of patriotic music. This should be a cinch for Powell.

Familiar Cleveland news anchor Leon Bibb (pictured) narrates; Akron Symphony music director Christopher Wilkins conducts.

Tickets are $25-$55.
