Brooklyn-based string quartet Brooklyn Rider has carved a niche for itself outside the usual string quartet repertoire, playing contemporary music and working with musicians outside the classical arena.
This past summer, banjo player Béla Fleck, also known for his wide-ranging musical interests and projects, released The Imposter, which continued his explorations in classical music (He’d long since established himself as a master of bluegrass, jazz, world music, and rock).
Coupled with the title concerto he wrote for banjo and orchestra is a second extended piece, “Night Flight Over Water,” featuring Fleck playing with Brooklyn Rider.
That piece will form the core of their joint performance at E.J. Thomas Hall, sponsored by Akron’s Tuesday Musical Association.
