As many schools lose resources for programs, Roots of American Music has stepped into the gap.
The Cleveland Heights-based nonprofit calls on the talents of experienced area musicians to go into underserved schools that have lost arts resources and offer programs that use traditional American musical genres like jazz, blues, bluegrass and gospel to engage kids in learning about history, culture, science, and language as well as the arts.
The musician/teachers who do this work include names you’ve seen playing frequently around time, like Brent Kirby, Ray DeForest, Jack DiAlessandro, Joe Hunter, Joe Rollin Porter, Deborah Van Kleef, and ROAM founder Kevin Richards.
The group holds benefits a couple of times a year to raise money for its work. It’s got one coming up at John Carroll University’s Dolan Science Center.
Music will be provided by He-Chaw Frunk (pictured), JHB All Stars, and Faith & Whiskey.
Concert tickets are $25. Prior to the concert at 6:30, there’ll be a VIP dinner. Tickets for dinner and the concert are $125.
