Big Bad Voodoo Daddy were on the early end of the ’90s swing revival.
They were formed in southern California in 1989 by singing/guitarist Scotty Morris. Like many of their ilk, they grew beyond the punk scene in which they were rooted.
And if there was any irony in their new direction, they’ve long since outgrown that too, performing a convincing and engaging version of their retro big-band dance style with nine members on the road.
The group has not just one, not just two, but THREE Christmas albums to its credit, including its new one It Feels like Christmas Time. It features bubbly, distinctive horn-heavy swing versions of popular songs like “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.” They’re a refreshing change from the bland versions you usually hear on those all-Christmas-music stations around this time of year. With so much Christmas music to draw on, it’s a sure thing their upcoming show at the Kent Stage is going to be festive. Wear your Santa hat and get in the spirit.
Tickets are $35-$45.
