Texas Plant is a new band on the local music scene. To call what they do “roots” music or “Americana” suggests a sound much more contemporary and rock-infused sound than what this quintet is working with. Its raw folk/blues is all ragged edges and frayed stress points.
Vocalist/harmonica player Matthew Leeb has a wizened voice aged beyond its (likely) years, and its “harmonies” are unison barroom shout-alongs. The music — provided by acoustic bassist Upright Pete, banjo & accordion player Sagan Ruby, percussionist Gavin Dautartas, and guitarist Danny McDonnell is chunky clunky, and spare.
The band’s posted a series of tracks at Bandcamp, starting with “Little Jimmy” last July if you want to hear what they’re about. These scratchy hard-luck tales sung in Leeb’s weathered voice might put you in mind of Tom Waits gone rural.
The band will be at the Beachland Tavern on Christmas night for those who need a dash of cold water thrown on all the cloying holiday cheer. Binder opens.
Admission is $6.
