Contrasting Local Rock Bands Highlight @GrogShop Bill

Thu 12/12 @ 8:30PM

The Grog Shop is offering a double bill of two area bands that draw on blues, jazz, and rock influences in different ways.

Clearly some of the time they put in at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio stuck with the Burning River Ramblers (pictured) when they came home to base themselves in the Cleveland area. You can still sense the jam band feel underlying the keen pop sensibilities informing the songs on their sophomore album To Color a Fool, released this past summer. It’s there in the relaxed, shimmery vibe of the tunes, especially when they draw on reggae influences.

Scarlet & the Harlots, a seven-piece female-fronted ensemble out of Kent, make a bigger noise than the Burning River Ramblers. Its self-titled EP featuring seven songs of its retro-sounding, horn-adorned blues-rock was released about a year ago. Red-haired vocalist Susan Fletcher (aka Scarlet) is a no-nonsense belter in the Janis Joplin tradition.

Boomslang is also on the bill.

Admission is $5.
