Florida Punk Rockers Against Me! @BeachlandCLE With New Album

Sat 1/4 @ 8PM

Florida punk band Against Me! Has had a very eventful career — and that was BEFORE singer/founder Tom Gabel came out as transgender and took the name Laura Jane Grace.

What began in 1997 as a solo project for Grace evolved into an actual band by 2000. They recorded for respected punk-rock indie Fat Wreck Chords before moving on to a major label deal with Sire for whom they recorded 2007’s New Wave and 2010’s White Crosses, both produced by noted Nirvana/Garbage producer Butch Vig.

They’ve survived countless tours in the U.S. and abroad with bands including the Foo Fighters, Green Day, Silversun Pickups, Social Distortion, and Cursive, a couple of bad van accidents, and numerous member changes. Their future as a band was in doubt when they lost their drummer and bassist early this year, but they’ve been replaced and the band has moved on.

Now they’re set to tour behind the release in a few weeks of their sixth studio album Transgender Dysphoria Blues — Grace’s transition is clearly not something she is choosing to ignore publicly or in her music, which has always been highly personal and even confrontational. “True Trans Soul Rebel” was released as a digital single last summer.

Their tour arrives at the Beachland Ballroom this week, with the Sidekicks and the Shondes opening.

Tickets are $17.
