Morticia’s Chair, Flannel Response @Mahalls20Lanes

Fri 12/20 @ 9PM

Morticia’s Chair was formed nearly 20 years ago by singer/guitarist Mark Kae following the demise of Screwtractor, a promising Cleveland band that got derailed in the major label machinery.

Kae’s dark, urgent vocals, which flirt with rock, folk, goth, metal, gypsy music and pirate shanties, among other things, are the band’s distinctive constant, although in recent years, the trio has stabilized with Frank Prpic on bass and backing vocals and Michael J on drums. They’re one of Cleveland’s hardest to categorize bands, which may be one of the reasons they’re not better known. They don’t slip easily into a particular scene.

And it’s been a while since their fourth full-length album Trampled by a Muse. That’s a situation they’re planning to rectify in the coming year.

While they’re waiting, fans can hear them play at Mahall’s where they’ll share a bill with mostly instrumental progressive/eclectic rock band Flannel Response, another group that’s hard to pin down, and K.I.N.D., featuring Sean Carlin, Ed Van Der Kuil, and Jeff Finn of ’90s Kent dance/pop group Dink who had a local hit with “Green Mind.”

Admission is $7.
