Pleasure Leftists Kick Off Free Local Music Weekend @GrogShop

Fri 1/3 @ 9PM

It can be hard to get people to go out in January. It’s cold, they’re burned out from the holidays, and they’re paying off those Christmas bills.

The Grog Shop is dangling some temptation to draw you out in the form of a weekend of free shows by some interesting local talent.

It kicks off with the Pleasure Leftists, a quartet whose influences look back to that transformational era when punk was turning into new wave, as bands pushed beyond the boundaries of simplistic loud/fast music to explore new broodier avenues with the same urgency. Singer Haley Morris’ vocals contain the DNA of singers like Patti Smith, Siouxie Sioux, Peter Murphy, and the Ians — McCullough and Curtis.

They recently released an EP’s worth of new music, which you can hear here.

Also on the bill are the bashing, wailing Royal Blood, Akron’s Ultrasphinx, whose raw rock mixes vibrating tension with sweet, poppy undertones, and DJ Nig Champa.
