Space: ROCK Gallery Pays Tribute to Pat’s in the Flats

Fri 1/3 @ 6PM

Homely little punk rock venues comes and go — but Pat’s in the Flats has been rocking away, on and off, since the late ’80s, an incredible record of longevity for such a bar.

The bar itself is much older — with roots as a spot where workers form the surrounding factories stopped for a drink after work. It’s been in owner Pat Hanych’s family since the ’40s.

It’s got quite a story, which includes hosting the earliest local shows by the White Stripes and Black Keys. But it’s a story less well known than it should be since Pat’s is off the beaten track and does no advertising.

It’s a story that Space: ROCK, the music photography gallery on Waterloo, whose mission is to expose people to different aspects of the local music scene, will tell in its next show, Pat’s in the Flats’ Roadhouse Chic: Rock and Rolling Rock at the Bottom of the Hill.  The show will include photos — including Jay Brown’s photos of those early White Stripes and Black Keys shows — flyers, posters, and quotes from people who’ve played and hung out there.

The show opens with a reception from 6-9PM during the monthly first Friday Walk All Over Waterloo, when the street’s merchants and galleries have special events. It will run through the end of February. Regular gallery hours are 1-5pm Saturdays and Sundays.
