Walk All Over Waterloo is Busy as Ever

Fri 1/3 @ 6pm

It’s another busy First Friday in Collinwood for the monthly Walk All Over Waterloo event. Waterloo Arts, Maria Neil Art Project, the Native Cleveland Annex and SPACE: Rock will all be premiering new exhibitions, and Gallery 160 will host a closing reception for Erin Mulligan’s impressive paintings.

Waterloo Arts hosts Making Mail: Mail Art from the Documentary – an exhibition of handmade mail art from Michael Polk’s Kickstarter-funded documentary about his friend and local artist Amber Esner. Esner graduated from Cleveland Institute of Art this year and currently works at American Greetings.  Making Mailexplores how her handmade mail inspired a broad, yet tight-knit collection of creative people across the country to make their own handmade mail.

“In our digital, virtual, happening somewhere out there on the web, fast, fast world, it’s interesting to take a look at what is being made by artists today who have embraced the slow, tangible, thoughtful form of snail mail to share their work,” says Waterloo Arts’ director Amy Callahan.

“There is something completely different for both the sender and receiver of an actual piece of mail,” she says. “From the making, to dropping it in the box and hoping for the best, the waiting and then the handmade bestowal arriving at its destination. The variations of what can be made seem endless, even with the many rules and regulations of the US mail. How is it possible that a small handmade creation can still be delivered to a far away recipient for a mere 44 cents? More importantly, how do I get on someone’s mailing list?”

Both the film and the gallery exhibition explore the art of mail art and its origins dating back to 1950, as well as technology’s role in the medium today.  The film screening is limited to Kickstarter supporters and Arts Collinwood members. Memberships will be available at the door for just $10.  This screening will take place before the closing reception on the 18th.

The Maria Neil Art Project will host two photographers in both their main gallery space and the Native Cleveland Annex.  Is This It is the first solo exhibition in the region in a decade for Eric Rippert.  Rippert will present new work made especially for this show, created using the classic platinum printing process known for its beauty, archival stability and one-of-a-kind prints.

Maria Neil’s John Farina and Adam Tully will also debut local photographer R Howard in her first professional exhibition.  R Howard’s work features local landmarks from a unique perspective.  Her work will fill the Native Cleveland Annex.  The opening reception for both shows begins at 5pm.

Space: ROCK will present Pat’s in the Flats’ Roadhouse Chic: Rock and Rolling Rock at the Bottom of the Hill – a special tribute to the local, underground concert club that’s been presenting bands since 1987 thanks to owner Pat Hanych.  This photography exhibition includes Jay Brown’s photos of an early, historic White Stripes performance.

The show will also include flyers, posters, comments/stories from musicians as well as patrons and more.  Pat’s patrons are encouraged to bring their own souvenirs or stories to contribute to the show.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see such a diverse and eclectic collection of art this weekend!
