Beatles’ U.S. Arrival, First Sullivan Appearance Honored @RockHall

Sun 2/9 @ 10AM-5PM

Fifty years ago, half the American boys between the ages of 8 and 18 saw their future — and it was called rock & roll. And half the girls decided they were in love with John, Paul, George or Ringo (It would be another couple of generations before a significant number of girls realized they didn’t have to sit on the sidelines).

The Beatles arrived on American soil, their reputation preceding them, on February 7, 1964. Two days later, they made their historic first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, then de rigueur Sunday evening family viewing back in the day when you only had four viewing choices and one of them was “educational TV” (the dreary forerunner of PBS).

Appropriately, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum marks this milestone with a day’s worth of events.

There will be gallery talks by curators in the Rock Hall’s Beatles exhibit, special film screenings in the Foster Theater, a lecture by Jason Hanley and Lauren Onkey from the Rock Hall’s education department on the impact of American music on the Beatles, and interactive activities for families and kids. This time girls are definitely included!

The museum will also unveil a guitar that John Lennon bought for the group’s second Ed Sullivan appearance the following month. Sullivan wasted no time capitalizing on this juggernaut!

All the events are free with regular museum admission:  $22 for adults, $18 for greater Cleveland residents, $13 kids 9-12, and free for kids under 9.
