Cleveland ’70s Underground Band Mirrors Plays @BeachlandBallroom

Sat 1/25 @ 8:30PM

Cleveland’s Mirrors, part of the tiny but legendary scene that gave birth to Pere Ubu, played the last gig of their original incarnation in 1975, with only an occasional one-off low-profile reunion show after that.

So when they co-headlined last year’s WRUW Studio-A-Rama in Case Western Reserve University’s Mather Courtyard — also the scene of their final gig in 1975 — scenesters were lined up along the stage with cameras, videocams, recording equipment, and admiring gapes.

Mirrors was the brainchild of singer/guitarist Jamie Klimek, who fashioned a sound that drew from the avant-garde bands that set of musicians admired as well as from poppier sources. The band released a 7” single shortly after its demise, but they had plenty of additional material as last September’s show demonstrated.

They’re taking it out for another spin at the Beachland Ballroom, with the same members as last year except for original member Paul Marotta who couldn’t make it from out of town. But Klimek will be joined by two other ’70s members, bassist Craig Bell (who now lives in Indianapolis and has a band called the Down-Fi) and guitarist Jim Crook, as well as drummer Tom Madej, and guitarists Tom Fallon and Dave Frandutto.  Yes, they’ve got four guitar players, which makes for a heck of a lot of sound.

St. Jayne opens the show.

Admission is $10.

There’s no web link for the band; Klimek doesn’t even own a computer or have an email address. Don’t hold your breath waiting for him to join the 21st century.
