Musician/Activist JD Samson Plays @BeachlandBallroom

Wed 1/29 @ 8PM

JD Samson comes from a refined background. She grew up in Pepper Pike and then attended Sarah Lawrence College in New York, where she earned a degree in film.

But instead of working in an upscale art gallery for a few years and then marrying a doctor, Samson, who came out as a lesbian while still attending Orange High School, joined punk bands and became an outspoken LGBT and feminist activist. She sealed her place in the music community when, just after graduating college in 2000, she joined Kathleen Hanna’s band Le Tigre which mixed electronics and visuals into their edgy music.

Samson played with them until their 2006 hiatus when she formed MEN with fellow Le Tigre member Johanna Fateman. The Brooklyn-based band also features heavy use of electronics as well as lyrics that confront social and political issues.

The busy and creative Samson has a lot of other projects going on as well (she’s even written songs recorded by Christina Aguilera and Cobra Starship). But it’s MEN who will be playing at the Beachland Tavern with two Cleveland acts: Blisse Anonyon Atu and the Very Knees.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door.
