If you think you have to give up eating quality, locally grown, raised, or produced food from farmers markets because it’s winter, think again.
Sure, the outdoor markets, with their profusion of succulent tomatoes and fresh corn, are history for now. You need to think eating seasonally. And the winter North Union Farmers Markets at Crocker Park and Shaker Square, which run weekly through Sat 3/22, can help you out.
They’ll have plenty of long-storage root vegetables like onions, potatoes, carrots, and turnips. And with more area farmers getting into season extension via greenhouses and hoop houses, you can find hardy, cool-weather greens like kale, collards, and spinach.
As always, the markets will have cheeses, milk, butter, pasture-raised chicken, grassfed beef, maple syrup, honey, and baked goods.
You can find the Shaker Square market inside the arcade in the northeast quadrant next to the CVS store. The Crocker Park Market is located at 143 Crocker Boulevard, across from the Cheesecake Factory.
