The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s annual celebration of Black History Month is already underway with a new exhibit called Jammin’, Jazzin’ & Jivin’, featuring posters from jazz-related movies.
But there is much more to come, all month long.
The Rock Hall will be screening some jazz-related films, including, on Wed 2/12, Vincente Minnelli’s Cabin in the Sky, with an all-black cast that included gospel singer Ethel Waters and sultry jazz vocalist Lena Horne as the good and bad women the hero is torn between. The film features music by Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
On Wed 2/19, the Rock Hall will show Listen Up — the Lives of Quincy Jones, a documentary about the producer/musician who worked with a pantheon of legendary jazz artists before going on to be known to the world as the man who produced Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
The series concludes with a program called A Celebration of Short Film. Rock Hall Vice President of Education and Public Programs Lauren Onkey and curator of the Jammin’. Jazzin’ and Jivin’ exhibit John Kisch will be joined by trumpeter Sean Jones (pictured), the artistic director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, to screen several short films and discuss them.
