The University of Akron Steel Drum Band has been a beloved institution since 1980.
Its cast of about 20 players is constantly changing since it comprises current graduate and undergraduate percussion students in the school’s music department. They play steel drums built by master steel drum technician Cliff Alexis, who’s from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, where the instrument originated.
And wouldn’t it be nice to be there now?
Since most of us can’t, the band is hosting a beach party at the Akron Civic Theatre. It’ll be toasty inside the ornate theater so come down and pretend.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 3-12.
