Cleveland Institute of Music’s Mixon Hall Master Series “Return of the Composer/Virtuoso,” concludes with a performance by Meredith Monk, a composer/performer with a long history of pushing both musical and performance boundaries.
She’s no typical instrumentalist with a yen to say something new with her instrument. From the beginning of her career in the arts scene, she’s been a deft juggler of artistic outlets that include theater, dance, film, and the most experimental of approaches to music and pure sound, especially in the innovative uses of her own voice. She came of age as an artist in the ’60s, a time when the boundaries between those arts were porous. Monk took full advantage of that freedom and has continued to do so throughout her career.
Her solo recital at CIM will include selections from several of her works: Songs from the Hill and Volcano Songs, and Music for Voice and Piano (1972-2006) including Gotham Lullaby, Travelling, Madwoman’s Vision, Choosing Companions, and The Tale.
