My idea of a perfect winter day involves a cup of hot cocoa, a warm blanket, a purring cat, and a good book.
But you have to admire the so-called “polar bears,” those brave souls who go for winter dips in open bodies of water. Some do it just because, but you especially have to hand it to the ones who do it for a good cause.
That includes those participating in the 18th Annual Law Enforcement Polar Plunge at Geneva State Park in Geneva-on-the-Lake, who are raising money for the Special Olympics.
There’s a high school plunge at noon, with the regular plunge following at 2pm. And for champion fundraisers with thick skins, there’s the “Super Plunge”: those who raise a minimum of $888 for the privilege (?) of jumping in the frigid lake once an hour for eight hours in a row. Ugh.
But there’s also the “too chicken to plunge” (or should that be too sane?) For $30 you get a T-shirt and can cheer the plungers on — or you can stay inside Geneva State Park’s Lodge and Conference Center Super Plungers are required to raise a minimum of $888 and will jump in once an hour for eight hours in a row.
Sign up for any of these options at the Special Olympics Polar Plunge website.
