Legendary Avant-Garde Guitarist Fred Frith Performs @TransformerStat

Fri 2/28 @ 7:30PM

Sadly, bands like Henry Cow are unlikely to ever make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  But such avant-garde bands in the late ’60s and early ’70s were instrumental in demolishing boundaries between musical genres and opening up song structures in just about any direct imagination led.

Composer/violinist/guitarist Fred Frith was a founding member of Henry Cow in 1968. Since the band broke up in the late ’70s, he’s continued to be involved in a series of experimental scenes/projects/collaborations. He’s worked with virtually every musician out there who’s doing musical boundary exploration including Henry Kaiser, Eugene Chadbourne, Bill Laswell, John Zorn, and Cleveland-bred drummer/composer Anton Fier of the Golden Palominos.

Among others, he’s worked with electronics/koto player Miya Masaoka who recently performed at the Transformer Station. Like her, he’s done extensive improvisation, worked with electronics, and experimented with using different objects to create new sounds with his instrument.

And like her, he’ll be performing at the Transformer Station, which is giving a home to musicians whose challenging work requires a thoughtful, open-minded audience.

Tickets are $20, $18 for Cleveland museum of Art members. Seating is very limited so make your reservations as quickly as possible.
