While many of Cleveland’s gifted jazz artists move on — usually to New York — to find a broader range of outlets for their talent, some equally important talents choose to stay home to form the nucleus of the local jazz scene and mentor up-and-coming players.
That’s the role Hammond B-3 organ player Eddie Baccus Sr. — whose sax playing son Eddie Baccus Jr. did indeed strike out to find fame and fortune elsewhere — has chosen. After a few years in the early ’60s working with artists like sax/flute player Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Baccus focused on steady gigging in local clubs. An he served as a mentor to “younger” musicians like Joe Lovano and Ernie Krivda (both now in their ’60s.)
He’ll be bringing his all-star group featuring guitarist Billy Artis, drummer Perry Williams III, and vibes player Cecil Rucker back to Nighttown. He’s promising some special surprise guests too, which, given his network in the jazz community, could be a real treat.
Tickets are $15.
