The yipping, yammering vocals, the relentless drive, and often-maniacal surges of the Village Bicycle’s music sometimes feels like a time trip back to some golden era of punk rock or post-punk — maybe CBGB in the ’70s, maybe the Euclid Tavern in the ’90s.
Fronted by guitarist Elizabeth Kelly and keyboardist Karah Vance, with a rotating rhythm section, they’re capable of shifting to a quieter but still sharp-edged sound on songs like “Robot Love Song.”
They’ll be playing a show at Mahall’s on the main stage with Akron duo ShiSho, another local band well worth catching. The two sisters, who call themselves Vivian and Midge Ramone, play guitar and accordion and harmonize on punk-influenced tunes — mostly self-penned — that are witty and wise, tongue-in-cheek without becoming cynical, pointed and insightful without becoming weighty.
