Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental — background — music for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, composed in mid 1800s, has had a long shelf life separate from the play. Not only is it a popular concert piece but it also contains the Wedding March, which was probably played at the last wedding you went to.
The Akron Symphony is putting the music back into context with a fully staged version of the score. Music director Christopher Williams will conduct the ensemble, which will be joined by the Summit Children’s Choir, the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet, and the Akron Symphony Shakespeare Players under the direction of Craig Joseph.
The stage of E.J. Thomas Hall will be filled with the magic and merriment of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, as well as one of Mendelssohn’s most popular pieces, for one night only.
