The number of northeast Ohioans connected to their immigrant roots has plunged. The number connected to the refugee community — those who didn’t come just to find opportunity but to escape oppression and persecution — is even tinier still.
The CityMusic Cleveland’s next series of shows aims to cast a spotlight on the refugees who have settled among us.
The CityMusic Chamber Orchestra, led by former Cleveland Orchestra assistant conductor James Feddeck, will be joined by internationally acclaimed world music percussionist Shane Shanahan (pictured); recent Cleveland Institute of Music graduate and Canton Symphony member, cellist James Jaffe; and narrator Ali Alhaddad.
The program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”), Cambodian composer Chinary Ung’s 1980 Khse Buon for solo cello, and the world premiere of young composer Dan Visconti’s “Roots to Branches,” commissioned by the orchestra and Shanahan.
That concert will be presented Wednesday evening at Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights, Thursday evening at Cleveland’s Trinity Lutheran Church, Friday evening at Lakewood Congregational Church, Saturday evening at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, and Sunday at 4pm at St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills.
All the concerts are free.
On Sunday, the musicians will be at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland with members of the area’s refugee community to teach kids’ songs and dances from around the world and help them make drums to play. That’s free with regular museum admission.
