Guide To Kulchur Launches Membership Drive @Mahalls20Lanes

Sun 3/9 @ 6:30-11PM

If you are not familiar with the bookstore Guide to Kulchur, don’t feel bad. The tiny space just north of the Capitol Theatre in Gordon Square, filled with an tantalizing assortment of used books, small press publications, periodicals and ’zines intended to provoke and challenge, is easy to overlook.

Shop owners R.A. Washington (pictured) and Lyz Bly are doing their best to make it harder to overlook, with special events — from book discussions to readings to concerts — both in the space and off premises.

It’s hosting an off-premises party at Mahall’s 20 Lanes to kick off its membership campaign. On the bill: Cleveland underground bands Obnox (the lo-fi project of Lamont “Bim” Thomas of This Moment in Black History), late ’70s/early ’80s post-punk influenced ensemble the Pleasure Leftists, and creepy, yowling noisemakers Fertile the Drip, as well as Oberlin’s Reformer, and DJ sets by 4NPLCY. Writers Carly Haufe and Rikki Schulte will add to the thoughtfully eclectic feel that’s the hallmark of Guide to Kulchur.

So what’s “membership” about? It supports the store’s Books 2 Prisoners program and the on-premises performance space Sally Tatnall Black Box, and allows you access to the $1 book sales, special deals on small presses, and their Zine Co-op to print your own ’zine.  Plus you get their quarterly magazine for free.

Suggested donation is $6.
