Margaret Brouwer’s Blue Streak Ensemble returns to Nighttown, giving patrons a little switch from jazz. A 1962 Oberlin Conservatory graduate, Brouwer’s a noted classical composer whose works have been played by major ensembles and orchestras around the world.
Brouwer headed the composition department at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 1996 to 2008. “Retirement” meant forming her own ensemble, which she named after a classic Cedar Point roller coaster, the oldest in the park.
The Blue Streak Ensemble — which currently includes pianist Dr. Shuai Wang, violinist Tara Lynn Ramsey, cellist Maaike Harding, flutist Madeline Lucas, percussionist Michael Jarrett, vocalist Sarah Beaty, and trombonist Chris Brosius, as well as Brouwer conducting — performs a wide range of music in addition to Brouwer’s own.
At Nighttown, they’ll play some Ravel, Bach, Debussy, Paul Desmond, and preview an aria from a new opera by Victoria Bond. They’ll also preview a new Brouwer work “Inner Voices,” written for the ensemble, as well as one of her older works, “Shattered Glass.”
