French composer Jules Massenet’s opera Werther, which premiered in 1892, has a plot (based on a story by Goethe) that’s much more straightforward than those of many operas, without the digressions and subplots. It’s pure opera too: lovers driven apart by circumstances, someone married to the wrong person.
The Metropolitan Opera’s current production features German tenor Jonas Kauffman in the title role of the poet Werther, and soprano Sophie Koch as Charlotte, the woman he pines for.
The opera will be broadcast at movie theaters all over the region as the next installment of the Metropolitan Opera HD series. It’s shown on Saturday evening and rebroadcast the following Wednesday.
Tickets are $22. Go to the Metropolitan Opera HD website for locations and tickets.
