Opera per Tutti does its bit to fill in the void in opera offerings, now that Cleveland lacks a major opera company. And as its name (“opera for all”) suggests, it works to make opera more accessible to those who may not be died-in-the-wool opera buffs.
Its next production will be staged in the burgeoning arts neighborhood of Gordon Square, at Cleveland Public Theatre’s Gordon Theatre. They’ll be taking on one of the less frequently performed works by one of opera’s major composers, Giuseppe Puccini (La Boheme, Tosca, Madame Butterfly), La Rondine.
Set primarily in mid 19th-century Paris, filled with courtesans and poets, nightlife and intrigue, and an almost instant passionate love match between the two principal characters that is thwarted in the end by social class expectations. Unlike La Boheme, Tosca or Madame Butterfly, nobody dies.
Opera per Tutti’s founder and general director Andrea Anelli stars as the central character, with Timothy Culver as the man she loves. Rebecca Freshwater, John David Nevergall, and Alfred Anderson sing the other lead roles.
General admission tickets are $28.
