Pioneering Electronic Composer Carl Stone @TransformerStat

Thu 3/6 @ 7:30PM

The adventurous musical programming by the Cleveland Museum of Art at the Transformer Station has featured a variety of artists doing unconventional things with musical instruments and voices. And one of the things it’s been doing is providing context for the electronic music which has become so ubiquitous today.

It didn’t just start when magazines like Spin and Alternative Press splashed “electronica” on the cover of special issues in the ’90s or when new wave acts like Howard Jones or Depeche Mode relied on them heavily for their particular sounds.

The latest electronic music pioneer to make his way to the Transformer Station is Carl Stone, who has been working in the field since the early ’70s and using them in live performances since the mid ’80s.

The Los Angeles native, who now spends time in both San Francisco and Japan, studied composition with a still earlier electronic pioneer Morton Subotnik who 1967 release Silver Apple of the Moon was the first full-on electronic music many people heard.

His pieces have been played all over the world and have been commissioned by art museums, musicians, and festivals. Needless to say, his music has been used by a huge number of adventurous filmmakers, theater directors, and choreographers, a use for which electronic music has found itself ideally suited.

Tickets for his Transformer Station concert are $20 or $18 for CMA members. Seating is limited so reserve as soon as you can.
