While serving at Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral in the mid 2000s, the Reverend Kurt C. Wiesner became known for his enthusiastic embrace of popular culture and his ability to tease out the spiritual themes to be found within it.
During that time, he hosted several versions of the “U2Charist,” a service developed in the Episcopal Church and first held in Baltimore in 2004, based around the music of Wiesner’s favorite band U2. Given the copious spiritual concerns found in their music, they’re ideal for a pop music mass. And given the familiarity of their music, the songs make easy substitutes for hymns in a participatory service like this one.
Wiesner left Trinity in 2008 to serve as rector at All Saints Episcopal Church in Littleton, New Hampshire. He’s been back since to conduct another U2Charist, which went over so well he’s been invited back to do it again.
That service will take place at Trinity Cathedral and all are welcome, regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof.
