Cleveland Chamber Music Society Features Contemporary Music With @eighthblackbird

Tue 4/29 @ 7:30PM

The Cleveland Chamber Music Society presents an ensemble that stretches the boundaries of its usual schedule that’s heavy on traditional string quartets, and even smaller ensembles.

Chicago’s eighth blackbird is a sextet that focuses on contemporary music. Like many groups whose mission is modern, they’ve commissioned many of the pieces in their repertoire. They hold residencies at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Chicago and the University of Richmond (Virginia).

That’s in addition to the busy touring schedule that brings them to Cleveland, where they’ll be performing several new pieces, including Murder Ballade Suite, composed by The National’s guitarist Bryce Dessner, music from Steve Mackey’s Grammy-winning Slide Suite, and Brett Dean’s Old Kings in Exile. They’re also scheduled to play Richard Reid Parry’s Duet for Hearth and Breath and Johnson/Ligeti’s Counting Duets/Etudes.

The concert takes place at Cleveland State University’s Waetjen Auditorium.

Tickets are $30.
