Gypsy Jazz & More With Occidental Gypsy at Nighttown

Sat 4/26 @ 8:30PM

It seems like the onslaught of so-called “gypsy jazz” is never-ending. And that’s understandable. The style, based in the music made by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli in Paris in the 1930s is lively with a seductively mournful undertone, tuneful enough to grasp easily and complex enough to reward repeated listenings.

Boston’s Occidental Gypsy is the latest ensemble to hit town waving the gypsy jazz banner. The quintet embellishes their take on the sound with a rock and world music influence, widening its genre and geographic scope. That makes its music even more of a feast for the dedicated listener and even more quick to fill a dance floor. The relatively new group released its debut album Over Here in 2011. It included among other things their own take on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

The group returns to Nighttown this week.

Tickets are $20.
