Eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter has been making a name for himself the avant-garde jazz scene for the last two decades, always showing his willingness to try just about anything.
After playing guitar and organ with sophisticated Bay area hip-hop ensemble, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, he released his first solo album in 1993. He’s never looking back, involving himself in a variety of projects and collaborations, including a band that paid tribute to three musicians — Thelonius Monk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and — James Brown.
The drummer in that project was Scott Amendola, another ready-for-anything, pocket-pushing musician with whom Hunter with Hunter partnered to release a pair of CDs: 2012’s Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead and last year’s Pucker. Making music as a duo gives Hunter’s guitar space to breathe and to explore musical ideas at leisure.
The duo will be performing at Nighttown.
Tickets are $20.
