Norwegian musician Frode Haltli’s instrument is the accordion, and no, he didn’t have Polish or Slovenian relatives who raised him on polkas. Instead, his specialty is contemporary classical music, especially by Scandanavian composers. He attended conservatories in Norway and Denmark before launching his international career slightly more than a decade ago.
Given his unusual choice of an instrument for classical music, he’s built a repertoire by commissioning pieces including several accordion concertos. He’s also worked with musicians from around the world, incorporating their native music as well as Norwegian traditional music.
Needless to say neither his approach to classical music nor to his instrument follows the expected path. That makes him a perfect fit for the Transformer Station, where he’ll play in Cleveland — the venue where the Cleveland Museum of Art hosts its sonically adventurous offerings. He’ll be playing a set of pieces you never heard of by composers you probably never heard of, all mid-20th century or later.
