Jazz bassist/composer Stephan Crump created Rosetta Trio in 2005 to record the album Rosetta, released the following year. That was hardly the beginning of his illustrious career, which has found him burrowed into all parts of the music scene, from mainstream to experimental jazz as well as pop music in many permutations from folk to blues to R&B. He launched his career after extensive education in both classical music and jazz.
As is the case with many jazz musicians, he’s juggling half a dozen different projects, while working as a sideman and composing film and TV music. But Rosetta Trio is his outlet for his own creative impulses. He and his collaborators, guitarist Liberty Ellman and Jamie Fox, released their third album, Thwirl, late last year. Their primarily acoustic music allows for a wide range of subtle colorations and musical nuances that they don’t allow their virtuosity to step on.
Listeners who want to savor those nuances should love the setting for their upcoming Cleveland concert. Rosetta Trio is the next offering from Mechanic Street House Concerts, a series hosted by a couple in their Ohio City home. They tend to book singer/songwriters and Americana acts; this will be their first jazz show.
