The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled its latest special exhibit this week.

Common Ground: The Music Festival Experience traces the roots of the modern music festival back to the Newport Jazz & Folk Festival through the golden age of rock festivals with 1967’s Monterey Pop Fest and 1969’s original Woodstock, ending up at today’s big events like Bonaroo and Coachella, as well as the proliferation of electronic dance music festivals.

While the exhibit contains some traditional “artifacts in a glass case” displays, it also includes oversized photos and numerous video displays, including a screen at the entrance to the exhibit which will be showing live feeds of festivals that take place during the run of the show.

And the second floor features an immersive display, intended to simulate the environment of a music festival (sans mud and rain, of course) from sunrise to sunset. Videos of performers and audience are screened large on four walls while the center of the room is occupied by a large scaffolding like those that hold sound and lights at an actual festival.

The exhibit is free with regular Rock Hall admission.

Here are some photos of the media preview.
