PHOTOSTREAM: Station Hope

Sat 4/26

Station Hope, a free community event dubbed “a block party with a purpose,” attracted such a huge crowd on a clear but chilly Saturday evening it was difficult to squeeze into the two buildings that comprise St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ohio City, where most of the performances were held.

The event aimed to showcase the space — the oldest consecrated building in Cleveland dating back to the 1830s but not used as a church since 2007 — and honor its history as a final way station in the Underground Railroad before fleeing slaves could take a boat to freedom in Canada.

Theater, dance, music, spoken word, poetry, storytelling, and interactive performances took place in multiple spaces in the buildings and outside, along with visual displays focused on slavery and Ohio’s role in the Underground Railroad.
