The mopers and naysayers who whine about the alleged decline of the Cleveland music scene must have been home Saturday night, while hundreds of music fans packed the Beachland Ballroom for a double bill of hot northeast Ohio bands: The Modern Electric and Wesley Bright & the Hi-Lites. Between the two bands’ growing fans bases, the room was overflowing with exuberant people.

The Modern Electric bring in lots of young women, who sing along with the quartet’s dramatic melodic tunes and bask in lead singer/keyboardist/guitarist Garrett Komyati’s charismatic stage presence. The band augmented its show with clips from old films and home movies, probably not a necessary enhancement given their own personal appeal and energy.

Akron soul ensemble Wesley Bright & the Hi-Lites followed, with their own high-energy show. It’s driven by a solid rhythm section and bright three-piece horn section, supporting lead vocalist Brent Wesley’s sharply emotional vocals and nonstop motion. Once again they showed why they’ve quickly become one of the hottest bands on the scene, walloping home a repertoire of tunes that sound like they stepped out of the ’60s classic soul era.
