Sweet Honey In The Rock Offers African-American Culture & Music @TriCPresents

Fri 4/11 @ 8PM

For just over 40 years, Sweet Honey in the Rock has been bringing their distinctive brand of women’s vocal music to audiences around the globe.  But they’re much more than an a cappella singing group. They draw on blues, gospel, jazz, soul, and African music to tell stories and educate listeners of all types about African-American history and culture.

The mission has remained the same, although the personnel has changed over the years. Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, who founded the original group with Louise Robinson, Carol Maillard and Mie, retired in 2004. But Maillard and Robinson both returned to the group after lengthy hiatuses. And Aisha Kahlil has been with the group since 1981, and Nitanju Bolade Casel since 1985. Shirley Childress  has been doing onstage sign interpretation for the group since 1981.

The group has released 25 albums, many of them live, capturing their electrifying, moving and uplifting performances. You can catch such a performance at the Tri-C Metro Campus Auditorium.

Tickets are $15-$35.
