There’s always something to see, hear, or taste at the 78th Street Studios Third Fridays, with new tenants moving in and new shows opening up monthly.
This month painter Lissa Bockrath opened a spectacular new show called “Unbroken” at the Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery. It featured her partly imagined paintings of extreme weather events. And Hillary Gent’s gallery, Hedge, which often presents multi-artist shows, has given her the entire space to new works by former Clevelander Jason Alexander Byers, who now lives in New York. The show, “Transitions,” featured striking silhouettes of landscapes and cityscapes rendered in tar on paper, as well as targets comprising multiple images of church spires.
The promised “dry” art walk, a response to the bust at Loren Naji’s West 25th Street Gallery a few weeks ago, didn’t happen. Some galleries opted to forgo the alcohol — including Naji’s Naji, Naji & Tekler 78th Street outpost and Bill Tregoning’s gallery where guests could enjoy a glass of cucumber- and orange-tinged water while taking in the extensive show of new work by abstract painter Matthew Dibble. But wine could still be found in many others.
