Cleveland Heights-based Roots of American Music has been doing its good work since 1999, bringing music-based programs to schools that have been forced to cut back on arts programming. And they’re designed to use music to teach kids other subjects, including reading, math, and history. They draw on the skills of some of the most accomplished area musicians to do this.
Each year, the nonprofit organization hosts a benefit at Nighttown to raise money for its work, with a full dinner and evening of music. That’s coming right up. This year, it will feature Rachel Brown & the Beatnik Playboys, an ensemble that plays an alluring sort of country- and jazz-inflected pop, with Brown’s come-hither vocals adding a distinctive stamp to the band’s stellar musicianship.
