After changing the format of its annual festival from a string of events in different venues over a couple of weeks to a one-weekend blow-out at PlayhouseSquare, Tri-C JazzFest has been staging preliminary events to get people psyched for the main event the last weekend in June.
For instance, it’s hosting a mixed-media evening called Strings & Threads: Jazz + Fashion + Art at the Negative Space Gallery in Asiatown. Roads Ahead Et Al Clothing will provide the fashion; painting Keelie Suzann will contribute the art, inspired by nature and her travels.
And the music will be courtesy of jazz guitarist Dan Wilson, who, probably not so coincidentally, teaches in the jazz program at Tri-C. Wilson’s an up-and-coming players on the local jazz scene. He’s got music degrees from Hiram and Youngstown State under his belt, as well as foreign tours with Eric Marienthal and the Golden Gospel Singers. And he recently collaborated with bassist Christian McBride in a performance at Mahall’s. He also fronts his own ensemble as well as plays solo gigs and released an album, To Whom It May Concern, as a band leader in 2012. Barely 30, this young musician is someone to keep an eye on.
Admission is $15. Go here for tickets.
