$2 Tuesdays @CainPark Kick Off With American Quartet Hey Mavis

Tue 6/24 @ 8PM

There’s music happening all over town all summer long, with local bands that can go toe-to-toe with bands from anywhere. Much of it’s free, and much of it’s not a lot more than that.

Cain Park’s $2 Tuesdays, for instance, give music fans a chance to kick back in the intimate Alma Theater, take a seat, and focus on the music while the summer night breezes waft in from outside.

The Americana quartet Hey Mavis, kicking off the series, is well worth $2 and more. It was formed by violinist Ed Caner singer/banjo player who was a major presence in Cleveland’s ’90s indie rock scene with bands like the Walk-Ins and Throckmorton and has played in virtually every genre and configuration since, and his wife, banjo player/vocalist/songwriter Laurie Michelle Caner, who formerly played in the Rhondas with two other majorly talented local ladies, Jen Maurer of Mo’Mojo and Sarah Benn of Shivering Timbers. They’re joined by ubiquitous vocalist/guitarist Brent Kirby and upright bassist Bryan Thomas.

Early last year, they released Honey Man, the follow-up to their 2010 debut, Red Wine, showing off their ability to saunter from mood to mood in songs that have some down-home flavoring added to smoky, complex musical stew.

The rest of the $2 Tuesday series includes Lenny DiCosimo and friends (7/15), the Lenny Russo Band (7/22), and the Red Hot Rhythm Review (7/29).
